The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved tariff adjustment requests from telecommunications operators, granting a maximum increase of 50% in response to current market conditions. This decision, made under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA), reflects the NCC’s mandate to regulate and approve tariff rates while balancing industry sustainability and consumer protection.
The approved adjustments, though lower than the over 100% increase requested by some operators, are aimed at bridging the gap between rising operational costs and static tariffs, which have remained unchanged since 2013. The NCC noted that these changes will adhere to the tariff bands established in its 2013 Cost Study and will be implemented transparently, following its newly issued Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024.
The decision comes after extensive consultations with stakeholders from the public and private sectors and takes into account ongoing reforms that aim to foster long-term sustainability in the telecommunications industry.
The tariff adjustments are expected to support operators in maintaining infrastructure investments and driving innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers with improved network quality, better customer service, and expanded coverage.
