The Enugu State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the activities of the Oriokpa Masquerade groups following the tragic deaths of two individuals earlier this week in Nsukka Local Government Area.
Chief Okey Ogbodo, the Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed the investigation in a statement issued on Friday. He expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety and holding the perpetrators accountable. The fatalities occurred in the university town of Nsukka, where Oriokpa masqueraders were reported to have caused widespread disturbance.
In response to the incidents, the state government has summoned traditional rulers and Presidents-General from affected communities, which include Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo. These areas have witnessed panic, injuries, and deaths linked to the excessive activities of the masquerade groups.
Governor Peter Mbah has ordered the Enugu State Police Commissioner to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible face justice. The government also issued a stern warning that further violations by any group or individual will not be tolerated.
“His Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has directed a full-scale investigation into the incidents, including the reported fatalities, to bring all those involved to justice,” the statement read.
The state government extended condolences to the families of the victims while warning that any future disruptions by the Oriokpa masqueraders would be met with strict sanctions. “No community or group should cause fear or threaten the security of our people,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the government’s determination to protect the rights and safety of all residents.
The meeting between community leaders and the government will take place on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the State Secretariat, where they are expected to address the issue and seek solutions to prevent further violence.
This decisive action underscores the Enugu State Government’s resolve to maintain law and order while ensuring justice for the victims.
