A tragic incident unfolded near Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, as a male student reportedly jumped from a three-storey building, resulting in his death.
The incident occurred at a private lodge located close to the university’s main gate. Eyewitnesses and residents in the area said the student may have been under the influence of hard drugs before taking the fatal leap. A loud thud was heard, prompting neighbours to rush to the scene, where they discovered the victim lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Authorities further revealed that the victim’s roommate, who was also found in an incoherent and unstable condition, is believed to have consumed the same substances. He is currently in police custody and will be interrogated once he stabilizes.
The identity of the deceased student has not been released as authorities work to notify his family. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over drug abuse among students, with calls for intensified awareness campaigns and mental health support systems within tertiary institutions.
