Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has been taken into custody by the Lagos State Police following allegations of assaulting a police officer over the weekend.
The confirmation of his detention came from Benjamin Hundenyin, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Command, who made a statement via his official Twitter handle on Monday.
Hundenyin stated, “Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today, turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, accompanied by his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest.”
Earlier reports had revealed that the Inspector-General of Police had ordered Seun’s arrest for an alleged assault on a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
Police personnel had reportedly visited Seun’s Lagos apartment and the African shrine in Ikeja in an attempt to apprehend him, but they did not find him at the locations.
Sources mentioned that efforts were being made to locate Seun, who was suspected to be in hiding. In response to the incident, the Police Service Commission (PSC) condemned the assault on a uniformed police officer who was carrying out official duties in Lagos.
The PSC commended the Inspector General of Police, Baba Usman Alkali, for promptly ordering Seun’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.
