As Lagos prepares for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Lagos State Police Command has activated a wide-ranging security operation aimed at ensuring peace, safety, and free movement across the state.
Acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the large-scale deployment of police personnel to cover all parts of the state before, during, and after the festive period.
The operation brings together conventional police units, tactical squads, intelligence officers, and special intervention teams positioned at strategic locations statewide. Marine police officers have also been deployed to strengthen surveillance along Lagos waterways and block any attempt by criminals to exploit river routes.
Police commanders at area and divisional levels have been instructed to step up patrols, sustain visibility policing, and maintain constant surveillance across neighbourhoods, highways, and public spaces. Officers on duty have been reminded to remain professional, civil, and firm while carrying out their responsibilities.
To address traffic congestion typically associated with the festive rush, over 5,000 police officers have been assigned traffic control duties. These officers will manage vehicular movement along major highways, inner roads, and identified gridlock zones to ensure smooth flow and reduce delays.
Concerned by the recent increase in fatal road accidents, CP Jimoh also convened a strategic stakeholders’ meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr Ayodele Ogunsan, alongside key agencies involved in road safety and emergency response. Participants included representatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), LASTMA, the Lagos State Fire Service, the Federal Controller of Works, and other relevant bodies. The meeting focused on coordinated and sustainable measures to improve road safety during and beyond the festive season.
In addition, joint police teams made up of conventional officers, tactical units, and intelligence operatives have been mobilised to crack down on traffic robbers, hoodlums, and other criminal elements seeking to take advantage of increased movement during the holidays.
Security coverage has been extended to places of worship, recreational centres, markets, motor parks, nightclubs, and other public gathering points expected to witness high human traffic during the celebrations.
CP Jimoh has reassured residents and visitors of the Command’s determination to protect lives and property throughout the festive period.
