In an achievement for Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is celebrating the remarkable success of its delegation at the ongoing International Telecommunications Union (ITU)’s World Radio Communications (WRC) Conference 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, expressed his excitement as two Nigerians secured leadership positions at the conference. Engineer Abraham Oshadami, the Director of Spectrum Administration at NCC, was elected Vice Chairman of the ITU’s Radiocommunication Advisory Group (RAG). At the same time, Dr. Lasisi Salami Lawal, Acting General Manager and Project Manager at the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited was elected Vice Chairman of the ITU-R Study Group Four (Satellite Services).
In addition to these key appointments, several other members of the NCC delegation were elected into various Working Groups at WRC 2023.
Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Dr. Aminu Maida commended the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for his guidance and leadership to the Nigerian delegation. Maida highlighted the Minister’s role in ensuring the delegation’s success and acknowledged the support and encouragement provided.
The WRC Conference is a crucial platform that brings together global stakeholders to determine the allocation of the world’s finite spectrum resources, vital for the functioning of everyday technologies.
Dr. Maida expressed his delight at the outcome of the elections, emphasizing that the roles of the elected Nigerians would significantly enhance Nigeria’s global influence in the telecommunications sector. He stated, “I am excited about the election of two of our colleagues, Engr. Oshadami and Dr. Lawal as Vice Chairs of the Key Study Groups. It is an honor for the Nigerian Communications Commission and the Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited to have produced these two intellectuals as global radiocommunication leaders.”
The NCC boss urged the newly elected officials to live up to the expectations of the global radiocommunication community and align Nigeria’s interests and goals with global best practices.
Dr. Maida also took the opportunity to engage with leaders in the global telecom industry. He held discussions with the Secretary General of the ITU, Mrs. Doreen Borden-Martin, as well as the Secretary General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), Mr. John Omo. These meetings focused on sharing the vision and priorities of the NCC and exploring potential areas of collaboration.
Additionally, Dr. Maida met with key directors at the ITU, including the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT), Dr. Cosmas Zavazava; Director of the Radiocommunication Bureau (BR), Mr. Mario Maniewicz, and the Director of the Telecommunication Standardisation Bureau (TSB), Mr. Seizo Onoe.
The NCC boss also engaged in a meaningful discussion with his UAE counterpart, the Director General of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), H. E. Engineer Majed Sultan Al Mesmar. The meeting aimed to share perspectives on effective regulation in the telecommunications sector.
