Directs Seizure Of Spy Plates, Reversal To Original Registered Number Plate
To strengthen the nation’s internal security, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered a total ban on the use of Police SPY Vehicle Number Plates by vehicle owners across the federation, with no exceptions. This is regardless of whether or not it is authorized, as all authorizations are hereby revoked indefinitely.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the order is necessary to prevent individuals hiding under the privileges of SPY police number plates from continuing to disregard traffic rules and regulations as well as other existing laws governing road use.
In the statement, the IGP also directed that police officers and officers from other security agencies assigned to VIPs who use the SPY number plates ensure prompt compliance with this directive or face arrest for violating the order.
Meanwhile, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the 36 Federation States and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), to fully implement the directives contained in the statement.
The IGP specifically directed the AIGs and CPs to confiscate all SPY number plates currently in use, but owners of such vehicles should not be arrested unless they are police officers or officers of other security agencies on escort duty.
IGP Baba, on the other hand, warned that while carrying out these duties, officers must ensure that citizens’ rights and privileges are respected in accordance with the laws of the land and international best practices.
He charged other security agencies and members of the public to work with the police to strengthen our internal security.
