The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has started removing trash from an illegal dumpsite at Tin Can Island Port on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, with the goal of cleaning up the axis.
Since the operation began yesterday, at that spot, which had been turned into a dumpsite due to the actions of residents and traders operating an illegal market in the neighbourhood, no less than fifteen truckloads of rubbish had been carried away to the Olusosun Landfill.
After overcoming a major difficulty of vehicular access to the area, which had previously impeded evacuation assistance, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, said the agency had mobilized men, trucks, pay-loaders, and other necessary items.
He further stated that the exercise will be ongoing in order to address the issue of indiscriminate garbage dumping in the Apapa axis and other parts of the state.
“As we usher in the new year, LAWMA is entirely committed to ensuring that every nook and cranny of the state is free of unlawful garbage dumping,” he remarked.
He also revealed that the LAWMA advocacy team was on the ground to educate locals about the importance of adopting effective waste management as a lifestyle.
Odumboni urged residents to avoid indiscriminate rubbish dumping, which has a number of negative implications, and to remember that keeping the city clean is a shared responsibility.
