In a strategic effort to improve the urban landscape and promote a cleaner environment, the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has announced the commencement of a pilot telecommunications infrastructure cleanup exercise across Lagos State.
The exercise is scheduled to begin on May 12, 2026, at Emina Crescent Junction, Toyin Street, Lagos.
As part of the initiative, major industry stakeholders are expected to actively participate in the operation. Technical teams from Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Cable Infrastructure Providers, and other relevant operators have been directed to be present at the designated location by 9:00 a.m.
Speaking on the exercise, the Chairman of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) Cleanup Committee, Segun Okuneye, stressed that safety remains a top priority throughout the operation. He urged all technical personnel involved to wear appropriate safety gear and strictly adhere to operational safety procedures to avoid accidents and ensure a smooth exercise.
The cleanup initiative is aimed at addressing the growing challenge of indiscriminate and poorly managed telecommunications infrastructure deployment across the state.
According to the organizers, the key objectives of the exercise include improving environmental sanitation by removing abandoned, redundant, and damaged cables that deface the city; enhancing public safety by reducing the risks associated with dangling wires and poorly maintained telecom equipment; and promoting orderly infrastructure deployment to support sustainable telecommunications growth within Lagos State.
“Telecommunications operators remain committed to maintaining the aesthetics of Lagos State and supporting initiatives that promote a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment,” the committee stated.
Also speaking on behalf of the ATCON Cleanup Committee, Ajibola Olude called on stakeholders and residents to cooperate fully with officials and technical teams during the exercise.
He noted that the success of the pilot scheme would serve as a major step toward building a more sustainable, organized, and visually appealing smart city infrastructure for Lagos State.
