The Budget Office of the Federation (BOF) has reiterated that Nigeria’s new Tax Reform Acts are legitimate and properly enacted, warning that speculation and unverified claims threaten both public trust and democratic governance. The statement responds to concerns raised by the Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives, which suggested possible post-passage changes to the laws.
The Office stressed that once a law has gone through debate, approval, and presidential assent, it cannot be altered outside established procedures. At the same time, it cautioned that spreading rumors or circulating documents of uncertain origin can damage public confidence and once trust is broken, it’s difficult to restore.
BOF welcomed the National Assembly’s investigation into the allegations, noting that official channels, not conjecture, are the proper way to resolve disputes. It also reminded the public and business community that authentic laws are determined by certified records and official publications, not by informal or viral reproductions.
From an economic perspective, the Budget Office emphasized that clear, stable laws are crucial for revenue forecasting, investor confidence, and budget credibility. To boost transparency, it proposed publishing verified texts in a single public repository, giving orderly access to certified copies, and ensuring that all implementing regulations match official legislation.
Finally, the BOF stressed that taxation is a democratic pact based on trust and clarity. Citizens and political actors are urged to rely on verified information, respect institutional processes, and avoid letting rumors stall reforms.
