Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Conservative Party, has once again faced criticism after acknowledging that her time in a Federal Government Girls College in Sagamu, Ogun State, was like being imprisoned.
Despite having grown up in Lagos State, in the South-Western region of the country, Badenoch, who is notorious for disparaging Nigeria, expressed her disgust at what she called “maltreatment and forced labour” once more when she related how she was given a machete to cut the grass and buckets to fetch water at school.
She was born in Wimbledon, London, in 1980, and lived in Nigeria and the US for the majority of her early life until coming back to the UK when she was sixteen.
She was among the final recipients of the birth right government in 1981.
She stressed that the pupils were in charge and said that her experience was based on the “Lord of the Flies” novel in a recent viral video.
“I attended a high school in Sagamu that was known as a Federal Government girls’ college. And when I relate the story of having to fetch buckets of water and also using a machete, it was like being incarcerated.
And that was the first time I had ever been away from home and my family. The institution is a federal boarding school. And there were, I believe, 150 girls living in the dorm, with 20 to 30 in each room. There were six rooms, you know.
Grass cutting was done with the machete. Since no one else is going to cut the grass, she explained.
This is the most recent in a string of degrading remarks she’s made about Nigeria.
