The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has extended financial support to sanitation workers injured while on duty, as well as to the families of sweepers who lost their lives in the line of service.
Speaking during the cheque presentation, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized that sanitation workers are the unsung heroes who work tirelessly, often in hazardous conditions, to keep Lagos clean and livable. He noted that the Authority has a responsibility to stand by its staff in times of need.
“Our sweepers work under tough and sometimes dangerous conditions to ensure the city remains clean. When accidents happen or lives are lost, it is our duty—not just as an organisation, but as fellow humans to support them and their families,” Gbadegesin said. “This gesture is our way of saying: we see your efforts, we value your sacrifice, and we will always support you.”
He explained that the financial assistance falls under LAWMA’s structured welfare scheme, which includes compensation for accidents, insurance coverage, regular medical checks, and ongoing safety training.
The initiative, he added, reflects LAWMA’s broader values of dignity, fairness, and inclusive governance. “No one working to keep Lagos clean should be left to face hardship alone due to work-related injuries or loss,” he stated.
Dr. Gbadegesin also stressed the importance of prioritising safety on the job and urged all sanitation workers to stay alert, especially in high-traffic zones and during night shifts. He assured that LAWMA is constantly improving its safety protocols to reduce workplace hazards.
The cheque presentation is part of a series of welfare-focused efforts by LAWMA to create a more supportive and dignified working environment for sanitation personnel across the state.
