Mojisola Meranda, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been officially sworn in as the Deputy Speaker following her nomination. Her immediate appointment comes in the midst of an ongoing leadership crisis within the Assembly.

Meranda had previously stepped down from the Speaker position as tensions escalated over the removal of Mudashiru Obasa, a move that has divided both lawmakers and the state’s political leadership. Addressing her resignation, Meranda stated that she made the decision to safeguard the integrity of the Assembly, emphasizing that she is not one to quit easily.

“I take a bow as your Speaker,” she declared.

Before stepping down, several lawmakers took the opportunity to commend her dedication, leadership skills, and legislative contributions during her tenure.

In his tribute, Desmond Olusola Elliot praised Meranda for her exceptional leadership, highlighting the positive impact she had on the House. Similarly, Temitope Adewale Ifako-Ijaiye I described her as a “heroine of democracy,” acknowledging her commitment to service and lamenting the circumstances surrounding her resignation.

Despite the leadership change, the crisis in the Lagos Assembly remains unresolved, with divisions persisting among lawmakers and party stakeholders.
