Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director and CEO of Galaxy Backbone, has emphasized the critical role of sustainable digital infrastructure in driving Africa’s economic transformation. Speaking through a representative at the Africa Tech Alliance Forum (AfriTECH 4.0) in Lagos, he highlighted the company’s dedication to building foundational systems to support the continent’s digital economy.
Delivering a presentation titled Building Digital Infrastructure for a Sustainable Digital Economy, Prof. Adeyanju noted that Africa’s digital journey presents immense potential for economic growth. However, it requires robust, scalable, and sustainable infrastructure to empower citizens, foster inclusivity, and drive innovation.
“Our investments in state-of-the-art data centers, fibre optic networks, and secure cloud solutions provide the backbone for public sector interconnectivity and broader digital services in Nigeria,” he said.
He highlighted Galaxy Backbone’s flagship initiatives, including the National Information Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB), which has significantly expanded connectivity across Nigeria.
The agency’s sustainability strategy focuses on three core pillars:
- Environmental Responsibility: Energy-efficient practices in data centers.
- Economic Empowerment: Supporting job creation and innovation.
- Social Inclusion: Bridging the digital divide by reaching underserved communities.
Prof. Adeyanju also outlined future plans for Galaxy Backbone, which include expanding cloud capabilities, strengthening cybersecurity measures, and exploring emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain.
The Government Service Portal (GSP), a unified platform for public services, was introduced as part of efforts to improve transparency and enhance citizen-centric service delivery.
“Over the next 12 to 24 months, we aim to advance digital infrastructure to meet Nigeria’s dynamic needs, while collaborating with stakeholders like NITDA, the Ministry of Communications, and ECOWAS to overcome challenges such as connectivity gaps and cybersecurity threats,” he stated.
Galaxy Backbone’s contributions were recognized with the ATAEx Outstanding Government Agency of the Year Award, a testament to its leadership and commitment to fostering a secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital economy for Nigeria and Africa.
