The National Economic Council (NEC) has urged state governments to embrace and implement technological innovations developed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). This strategic move is seen as a critical step toward accelerating industrial development and diversifying Nigeria’s economy.
The resolution was reached during the 146th NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting featured a detailed presentation by NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, who outlined the agency’s roadmap for transforming the industrial sector through groundbreaking technological solutions.
NASENI’s initiatives focus on key areas, including renewable energy, health biotechnology, agriculture, transportation, and digital technology. Among the agency’s flagship projects are electric vehicles for sustainable urban mobility, solar-powered home systems for rural electrification, and innovative smart devices designed for the Nigerian market. Additionally, NASENI is driving agricultural productivity with solutions like solar irrigation pumps and coal-based fertilizers.
NEC commended NASENI’s remarkable progress, highlighting its pivotal projects such as vaccine production facilities, renewable energy parks, and compressed natural gas (CNG) centres. The agency’s ability to attract $3.23 billion in investments and its launch of the DELT-Her programme, aimed at empowering female engineers, further underscore its role in advancing Nigeria’s technological landscape.
The Council directed NASENI to scale up lithium battery production in regions rich in natural resources and to enhance the National Asset Restoration Programme for repairing tractors across the country. It also emphasized the importance of fostering partnerships between NASENI, state governments, and private enterprises to establish industries that leverage local raw materials, create jobs, and boost economic growth.
To facilitate the implementation of NASENI’s initiatives, NEC called for policies that encourage innovation, improved infrastructure, and streamlined processes. Additional support measures include providing land and seaport access and establishing showrooms to promote locally made products.
With its mandate to champion Nigeria’s industrial self-reliance, NASENI remains at the forefront of the federal government’s vision for sustainable economic growth. By harnessing innovation and fostering industrial excellence, the agency is positioning Nigeria as a global leader in technology and industry.
