During a recent visit to the College of Nursing Sciences in Adazi-Nnukwu, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, encouraged aspiring nurses to explore opportunities abroad if they feel their needs cannot be met in Nigeria.

Obi, who previously served as the Governor of Anambra State, addressed the students with empathy for the challenges healthcare professionals face domestically. “I’ve advised the Nursing Council against restricting nurses from seeking international opportunities after graduation,” Obi shared. “If the situation here isn’t working for you, find a place where you can thrive. We should never ask anyone to stay where progress seems difficult.”

He expressed hope that Nigeria’s future would one day attract talented professionals back to their homeland. “I believe that as we work towards a greater Nigeria, you will return when the time is right,” Obi said.

To illustrate his point, Obi mentioned a personal story about his former assistant, Michael-Jude, who recently moved to the United Kingdom. “My former PA, who was here with me on my last visit, has since relocated abroad. He married a nurse, and the UK granted them study rights to help build their careers. Now, he’s in the UK, and I am in search of a new assistant.”

Obi’s comments underscored his recognition of the realities that drive professionals to seek opportunities elsewhere, while also expressing optimism for a Nigeria that will one day be capable of retaining and welcoming back its brightest talents.
