Beginning October 1, 2024, the Lagos State Government will enforce new standards for commercial buses operating on the Lekki-Epe corridor, marking a significant milestone in its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI). Under these reforms, only Danfo buses meeting Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) standards will be permitted to operate as mid-capacity buses, aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency in public transportation.
The BRI, a cornerstone of the state’s transportation strategy, aims to overhaul bus operations along the Lekki-Epe axis to create a more reliable and safer commuting experience. Korope minibuses, also required to meet VIS standards, will be integrated into First Mile Last Mile services, focusing on interior roads from Obalende/CMS to Ajah, specifically targeting areas like Eleko.
To ensure compliance, all participating buses will undergo rigorous roadworthiness checks, while drivers will receive specialized training at the state’s driving institute to improve skills and adhere to safety protocols.
Designated routes will be assigned to these buses, with stringent monitoring to maintain order and efficiency. An e-ticketing system via the Cowry platform will be introduced to reduce cash transactions and expedite boarding, enhancing passenger convenience.
The initiative also addresses illegal pickups and unauthorized stops, aiming to eliminate practices that contribute to traffic congestion and pose risks to commuters. Transport operators must register for new franchises with the Ministry of Transportation to ensure adherence to government standards and regulations.
Through these reforms, the Lagos State Government aims to establish a well-organized, efficient, and safe public transportation system on the Lekki-Epe corridor, significantly improving daily commuting for thousands of passengers.
