In a move aimed at revolutionizing Nigeria’s Information Technology (IT) sector, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has received commendation from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for its decision to unbundle the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Science programme. The unbundling will result in four distinct specializations: Artificial Intelligence, Network & Cloud Computing, Software & Web Development, and Cybersecurity & Data Protection.
NITDA sees this visionary step as a game-changer, not only for the IT sector in Nigeria but as a seismic shift in equipping Nigerian graduates with in-demand skills crucial for navigating the ongoing digital revolution. The move strategically places polytechnics at the forefront of nurturing young Nigerians capable of addressing specific challenges and capitalizing on the vast opportunities presented by emerging technologies.
The agency views this development as a significant stride in promoting the growth of the IT sector and enhancing the capabilities of the nation’s workforce. It stems from the findings of the IT Skills Gap Assessment, conducted in collaboration with CC Hub, which identified 12 high-demand IT skills both within Nigeria and globally.
Recognizing the immense potential of Artificial Intelligence, Network and Cloud Computing, Software and Web Development, as well as Cybersecurity and Data Protection, NITDA previously established the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI). These entities serve as special purpose vehicles to nurture talent and equip interns and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with the necessary skills for success in the digital era.
Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director General of NITDA, stressed the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to ensure the successful implementation of these specialized fields.
NITDA expressed gratitude to the National Board for Technical Education, lauding its vision and commitment to advancing technical education in Nigeria. The agency encourages a paradigm shift in educational approaches, urging institutions to proactively incorporate elements of digital literacy into their curriculum structures.
In line with this, NITDA believes that embracing the National Digital Literacy Framework (NDLF) would be a transformative step towards ensuring that the Nigerian educational system remains at the forefront of technological innovation. This approach aims to equip students with the competencies needed for success in the modern world.
