In a last-minute effort to prevent the planned nationwide strike set for October 3, the Federal Government of Nigeria has taken decisive action by calling for an emergency meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and their counterparts from the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
This crucial meeting is slated to take place later this evening within the confines of the Aso Villa, specifically in the Conference Room of the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President. Initially scheduled for noon today, the meeting was rescheduled to the evening hours to accommodate the needs of Organised Labour, allowing them to reach out to their leaders located outside of Abuja.
Sources close to the matter have disclosed that the NLC and TUC received the government’s official invitation earlier today, facilitated through the Ministry of Labour and Employment. This development underscores the urgency with which the government is addressing the impending strike, signaling a potential turning point in the ongoing negotiations between the government and organized labor.
