As it concentrates on executing its strategy to drive growth, de-leverage faster, and expose value in its fintech and fibre businesses, MTN Group has announced senior leadership appointments to operating companies in Nigeria, Iran, and Sudan, all of whom are internal candidates. The appointments will begin on April 1, 2022.
“Having the best talent, culture, and future-fit skills is a critical enabler of our strategy,” says MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita. “Today’s announcement exemplifies the Group’s depth of talent and the strength of our succession planning.
“After MTN Nigeria Chief Operating Officer Mazen Mroue’s recent appointment as MTN Group Chief Information and Technology Officer, Hassan Jaber takes over as MTN Nigeria’s COO. He joins from MTN Irancell, where he was COO, and brings with him 25 years of MTN Group telecoms and digital experience.
MTN Nigeria’s role in delivering on the Group’s strategic intent of leading digital solutions for Africa’s advancement will rely on Jaber’s track record of growing and scaling-up telecom operations and developing digital companies using the power of mobile technology. He has worked for MTN in Ghana, Guinea-Conakry, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen, among other places.
Malik Melamu, who has over 28 years of management and executive experience, will join MTN Irancell as COO, having previously served as CEO of MTN Sudan. He formerly worked as the CEO of MTN Benin and the Executive for Sales and
Distribution and Customer Experience at MTN Group, among other positions. Stepping into the CEO role at MTN Sudan is Ziad Sabah, whose career within MTN spans more than a decade, most recently as MTN Syria’s CEO, and before that, MTN Syria’s Chief Marketing Officer. Ziad is a seasoned business executive who will play a key role in bolstering MTN Sudan’s market position through digital and financial inclusion efforts.
“These appointments highlight the MTN Group’s breadth of leadership bench-strength, and we remain committed to delivering long-term growth to our stakeholders.” Nigeria, Iran, and Sudan are economies with appealing demographics and significant potential for digital and financial inclusion growth,” Mupita adds.
