Nigeria’s inspector general of police has announced that the notorious Special Anti Robbery Squad or SARS has been dissolved effective immediately after 4 days of protests.
The the Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni, while noting that the dissolution of SARS is in response to the yearnings of the Nigerian people, observes that by this dissolution, all officers and men of the now defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad are being redeployed with immediate effect.The IGP also assures that a new policing arrangement to address anticipated policing gaps the dissolution of SARS would cause has been evolved and shall be announced in due course.
The trend started on last week when innocent citizens marched in solidarity to oppose the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigerian Police Force to end police oppression and brutality on the youths.
By Friday, October 9, the #EndSARS hashtag trended number one worldwide on Twitter, particularly in the UK and the United States as concerned celebrities all over the world began lending their support to end police brutality.
