In an effort to instill the values of effective waste management among the younger generation, LAWMA Academy, the educational arm of Lagos Waste Management Authority, has successfully organized a four-week summer school. The program, which commenced at the Authority’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, aims to educate children aged 8 to 12 on the importance of proper waste disposal and environmental preservation.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the managing director/CEO of LAWMA, emphasized the significance of teaching children from a young age about waste management and environmental sanitation. Through various engaging activities like arts and crafts, upcycling, indoor and outdoor sports, and exciting field trips, the Academy seeks to foster a love for the environment and create conscientious environmental activists.
“The Summer School program is designed to raise ambassadors for a cleaner and healthier environment with seasoned facilitators in a conducive learning environment,” said Dr. Gbadegesin. He encouraged parents and guardians to enroll their children and wards during the extended school holiday and also offered an online option for those unable to participate physically.
This year marks the third edition of the program, and Mrs. Elizabeth Ademola, the Academy’s team lead, highlighted its success in simplifying waste and environmental management concepts for children. The summer school aims to equip each child with holistic knowledge of environmental sustainability practices, nurturing responsible citizens who will actively contribute to a cleaner Lagos.
Since its inception, LAWMA Academy’s summer school has benefited hundreds of pupils in the state, providing them with essential waste management and environmental knowledge. By continuing to invest in the education of the younger generation, LAWMA aims to create a brighter and cleaner future for Lagos and beyond.
