Nigeria has taken a major step in enhancing its digital governance as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) officially assumes management of the Nigeria Government Enterprise Architecture (NGEA) infrastructure. The handover ceremony in Abuja marked the successful conclusion of a strategic collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

This move signifies a shift from isolated IT projects to a more coordinated and disciplined strategy for national digital investments. As a central element of the e-Government Masterplan 2.0 (Ne-GMP 2.0), the NGEA initiative aims to establish a standardized and structured framework for overseeing government IT investments and digital resources. It also aims to guarantee that technology adoption within public institutions supports national priorities, while boosting both efficiency and accountability.

With the system fully operational, government agencies are poised to implement integrated digital workflows that enable efficient data sharing and interoperability. This is expected to reduce redundancy, strengthen risk management, and convert policy goals into measurable digital results.

Over the past two and a half years, Nigerian experts have teamed up with Korean counterparts to build the country’s digital architecture, create reference models, and run pilot programs in key institutions. These include the National Identity Management Commission, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, and NITDA. Officials say the NGEA marks a shift from piecemeal digital projects to a unified, citizen-focused system. The infrastructure is hosted by Galaxy Backbone Limited, providing a secure and reliable platform for nationwide deployment.

Looking ahead, NITDA is expected to collaborate with government stakeholders to expand and sustain the system, while the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy will provide policy guidance to ensure its adoption across the country.
