In a strategic effort to strengthen Nigeria’s public sector through technology, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has completed a specialised digital capacity-building programme for staff of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), alongside the donation of 35 laptops to support their operations.
The initiative is designed to help the Commission transition from largely manual processes to a more efficient, data-driven system of oversight that promotes transparency, accountability, and equitable representation across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s priority of reforming the economy for sustainable and inclusive growth, while strengthening governance and public service delivery. It also forms part of NITDA’s Digital Literacy for All (DL4All) initiative, which aims to enhance digital competencies across public institutions and equip government personnel with the skills needed to drive Nigeria’s digital transformation.
The training, held at the Commission’s headquarters, focused on building participants’ expertise in critical digital competencies such as data analysis and data management—skills considered essential for improving institutional performance and evidence-based decision-making.
Speaking on behalf of the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, the Acting Director of Digital Literacy and Capacity Building, Dr. Ahmed Yusuf Tambour, explained that the programme was specifically designed to strengthen the Commission’s operational capacity.
According to him, the training was aimed at improving staff proficiency in digital literacy and enabling them to leverage data tools in carrying out their responsibilities more effectively.
He noted that particular emphasis was placed on data analysis and management because these areas closely align with the Commission’s statutory mandate.
The Federal Character Commission plays a critical role in ensuring fairness and balanced representation within Nigeria’s public service. To effectively perform this oversight function across MDAs nationwide, the Commission relies heavily on accurate and well-managed data.
By strengthening staff capacity in data handling and digital technologies, NITDA seeks to enhance the Commission’s ability to manage nationwide datasets more efficiently and transparently.
The programme trained 35 participants and was widely welcomed by staff of the Commission, who described it as both impactful and timely.
As part of the intervention, NITDA also donated 35 laptops to the Commission to support continuous learning and enable staff to seamlessly apply the digital skills acquired during the training in their daily operations. The equipment is expected to improve workflow efficiency and sustain the benefits of the capacity-building exercise.
The initiative underscores NITDA’s continued commitment to promoting digital inclusion and innovation across government institutions under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
By equipping public servants with practical digital skills and the tools required to perform their duties effectively, the Agency is helping to strengthen data-driven governance, enhance institutional efficiency, and support the Federal Government’s vision of a modern and responsive public service capable of driving national development.
