In order to provide a reliable, transparent, and internationally accepted headcount, Nigeria’s federal government has made good communication a top priority as the country approaches its next national census and this was made evident in Abuja when Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, welcomed Dr. Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), who was on a courtesy visit with a management delegation.
Idris emphasized that without correct demographic data, meaningful national planning cannot take place, cautioning that erroneous numbers jeopardize development initiatives and the implementation of policies.
The minister stated that the Tinubu administration is committed to putting due procedure, legality, and legitimacy ahead of expediency.
Once the President formally announces a census date, he promised the NPC that his ministry and its agencies—including the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Voice of Nigeria (VON), and News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)—will fully support their efforts to mobilize citizens and promote national advocacy.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is meticulously coordinating all legal and procedural criteria to guarantee the census satisfies international standards, according to Idris, who also notes that the presidential proclamation continues to be the legitimate catalyst for the activity.
He promised that the ministry would fully utilize its communication apparatus in the interest of the country and asked the NPC to increase the usage of government-owned media platforms for ongoing public education. NPC Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, had also commended the Ministry of Information for its steady assistance, stating that public mobilization was essential to the census’s success.
In order to ensure effectiveness, openness, and credibility once a new census date is announced, he said that the commission is continuously being improved in terms of logistics, ICT infrastructure, systems, and personnel.
Yusuf emphasized that public trust is essential to efficient population management in Nigeria and asked for continued access to government media channels to increase public awareness of vital statistics, civil registration, and census participation.
