The newly reported presidential command of mercy has not been executed, according to Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.
According to a statement made by his office yesterday in Abuja, no prisoner who obtained mercy under the President’s recent use of the power of mercy has been freed from detention.
Before any instrument of release is given, he continued, “the process is still in its final administrative stage, which includes a standard review to ensure that all names and recommendations fully comply with established legal and procedural requirements.”
It is significant to remember that the issuing of the instrument for the implementation of the decision pertaining to each beneficiary is the final step in the exercise, following approval by the Council of State.
“Before the instrument is sent to the Controller-General of Corrections for required action, this stage provides an opportunity for a final review of the list for remedial purposes, if any.” The government’s dedication to openness and due diligence is demonstrated by this verification procedure, which is a normal procedure.
