As Lagos prepares for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on residents to adopt proper waste management practices to ensure a clean and healthy environment during and after the festive period.
In a statement released on Wednesday, LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, assured residents that the agency has made comprehensive provisions to address the anticipated increase in waste generation during the Sallah season. He noted that waste collection services would operate across all designated routes to guarantee timely and effective refuse evacuation throughout the city.
“Eid-el-Kabir is a season of joy, gratitude, and communal harmony. While residents celebrate, we must also remain mindful of our civic responsibilities,” Gbadegesin said. “Proper disposal of animal waste, food remnants, and packaging materials is essential to maintaining public hygiene.”
He added that LAWMA officials and enforcement teams would closely monitor waste management operations across Lagos to ensure full compliance with environmental regulations. He emphasized the need for residents to avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels, road medians, and open spaces, warning that such practices endanger public health and would attract sanctions.
Gbadegesin also urged butchers and livestock dealers to use only approved slaughter facilities to reduce contamination and uphold public health standards.
While wishing Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyful Eid celebration, the LAWMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s year-round commitment to environmental cleanliness. He encouraged residents to support this effort by properly bagging their waste, using covered bins, and ensuring timely pickup by assigned PSP operators.
In a related development, LAWMA joined the global community to mark World Environment Day 2025, observed annually on June 5. This year’s theme, “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” highlights the urgent global call to protect the environment from plastic waste.
Dr. Gbadegesin said the theme aligns with LAWMA’s ongoing mission to transform Lagos into a cleaner, healthier city. He stressed that environmental restoration must begin at the individual and community levels, through everyday choices and actions.
To this end, LAWMA has initiated a series of advocacy campaigns and clean-up exercises in partnership with environmental stakeholders, schools, and grassroots organisations. The agency is urging market leaders, religious institutions, and community groups to promote environmental education and encourage practices like waste separation, clearing of blocked drains, and proper waste disposal.
“World Environment Day is a reminder for every Lagos resident to reflect on the impact of environmental negligence,” he said. “It is also a call to join hands with government agencies in restoring and protecting the ecosystem that sustains our lives and livelihoods.”
