A new chapter in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey opened in Ibadan as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), inaugurated a modern Information Technology Community Centre aimed at equipping youth and women with future-ready digital skills.
The centre, located within the Oladipo Alayande School of Science, Oke-Bola, Ibadan, was named in honour of Onikepo Akande, a trailblazing figure from Oyo State, and stands as a testament to the growing emphasis on inclusive digital empowerment.
Representing a significant investment in human capital development, the facility is outfitted with advanced ICT tools and resources to facilitate smart learning and tech-driven innovation. Speaking during the commissioning, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu highlighted the centre as part of President Tinubu’s broader agenda to diversify the economy through digital advancement and creative enterprise.
“This initiative reflects our shared goal to uplift communities by arming our youth and women with the skills to thrive in today’s digital-first world,” she noted. The First Lady also revealed that this is just the beginning, as plans are underway to commission ten additional centres in other states.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed strong support for the project, praising both NITDA and RHI for what he described as a timely and transformative initiative. “This is how we build the future — by giving our people access to knowledge, technology, and opportunity. We are committed to ensuring this centre makes a lasting impact,” he stated.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the initiative as a launchpad for young Nigerians to compete globally, create tech-enabled solutions, and drive homegrown innovation. “This centre will serve as a breeding ground for ideas that can shape industries and open doors globally,” he said.
In his remarks, NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, emphasized that the centre forms part of a nationwide strategy to raise Nigeria’s digital competency levels, reduce joblessness, and encourage tech-driven entrepreneurship. He commended Senator Tinubu for championing the cause of underrepresented groups, adding that her leadership continues to inspire actionable change.
According to Inuwa, NITDA has worked closely with the Ministry of Education to integrate digital literacy into school curriculums, reinforcing the long-term vision of nurturing a tech-savvy generation. “We don’t want this facility to sit idle. It should become a hive of learning, creativity, and opportunity for both the school and the broader community,” he urged.
With the Ibadan centre now active, stakeholders are hopeful that it will serve as both a learning space and a springboard for inclusive digital transformation across Oyo State and beyond.
