As part of its initiative to advance technology education in Nigeria, the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) has donated state-of-the-art model science laboratory equipment to Migrants Community Secondary School in Ibakang, Akwa-Ibom State.
During the commissioning ceremony of the upgraded science laboratory, Dr. Idoreyin Imiyoho, the Acting Director General of NOTAP, highlighted that the office, which primarily regulates the inflow of foreign technology through the registration of technology transfer agreements, also aims to promote the development of locally inspired technologies. She emphasized that science and technology are crucial for national development, and NOTAP, as a key player in Nigeria’s Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) ecosystem, is committed to equipping secondary schools with model science laboratories to foster science education.
Dr. Imiyoho remarked that science education is essential for societal advancement and unlocking the potential of Nigerian youth. The donation of the model chemistry laboratory apparatus is intended to ignite curiosity and discovery among students, providing them with the tools to achieve their educational goals. She noted that the laboratory would not only facilitate experiments but also nurture a research culture, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students.
She reaffirmed NOTAP’s dedication to supporting schools with modern equipment, symbolizing the office’s commitment to nurturing future scientists and innovators. Dr. Imiyoho also linked this initiative to the renewed hope mantra of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stressing that science education is vital for shaping the nation’s future and ensuring every child has access to quality education regardless of their socio-economic background.
Dr. Imiyoho paid tribute to Chief Friday Okono, the pioneer Director and CEO of NOTAP, for his relentless efforts in advancing the office’s mission and his dedication to his community. The donation was also a celebration of his contributions to NOTAP and national development.
Expressing gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, led by Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, for their unwavering support, Dr. Imiyoho urged the school’s principal, teachers, and students to protect and properly utilize the equipment to ensure it serves as a lasting educational legacy.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, the Honourable Commissioner of Education for Akwa Ibom State, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Lady Rose Bassey, commended NOTAP for enhancing the state’s educational infrastructure. She noted that the donation aligns with the ARISE agenda of the current Akwa Ibom government under His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, which prioritizes providing children with quality educational opportunities to compete favorably with their peers.
Mrs. Etiebet emphasized the importance of a practical approach to education, which enables youth to develop essential skills and knowledge. She highlighted various state projects aimed at improving education quality and urged continued collaboration with NOTAP to advance science education, crucial for the nation’s sustained economic development.
