The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards digital transformation with the inauguration of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Ecosystem Steering Committee. The ceremony, held in Abuja at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive development.
Chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, the Steering Committee will oversee the strategic direction of the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project. The project aims to provide every Nigerian with a secure digital identity to enhance service delivery, governance, and opportunities in the digital economy.
Sen. George Akume highlighted the project’s potential to revolutionize identification and service access, emphasizing the need to address data privacy and citizen engagement challenges for success. Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, DG/CEO of NMC, stressed the importance of digital identity in driving socioeconomic development and empowering citizens, expressing confidence in the project’s impact.
The Steering Committee, comprised of key government officials and NMC representatives, will work to formulate policies and oversee the project’s implementation while upholding international best practices and respecting citizens’ rights. Engr. Coker-Odusote affirmed the Commission’s dedication to collaborating with the Committee and partners to achieve a digitally empowered Nigeria.
