Disruptions to internet connectivity have been documented in Nigeria due to damage inflicted upon international undersea cables crucial for the country’s online connectivity. Telecommunication firms and several banks, reliant on these cables for internet provision, have been notably impacted by the outage. The incident primarily stems from substantial impairment to major undersea cables near Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, consequently resulting in internet service downtime across various West and South African nations.
Among the affected undersea cables are the West Africa Cable System (WACS), the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), MainOne, and SAT3. Conversely, Glo 1, under the ownership of Nigeria’s foremost digital services enterprise, Globacom, has remained unscathed by the damage, sustaining regular operations. Notably, data users, internet service providers, and financial institutions reliant on Glo 1 have continued their activities without interruption.
Analysts within the industry attribute this resilience to the robust design and construction of Glo 1 International Submarine Cable, which effectively shielded it from the adverse effects of the damage incurred by other cables.
