Big Win for STEM: 12 Universities Secure N4bn Each in FG Upgrade Plan

The Federal Government (FG) has granted ₦48 billion in funds, or ₦4 billion for each of 12 universities, primarily for modernising engineering and technology facilities throughout the nation, which will significantly increase technical education and engineering capability in Nigeria. Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, made the statement on Monday, March 2, 2026, in Abuja, at the opening of the Implementation Committee for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Special High-Impact Intervention Projects.

 

The Intervention’s Strategic Objectives

The project, according to the Minister, is intended to renovate engineering workshops, labs, and technology facilities and, if needed, assist in the building of brand-new, contemporary facilities furnished with state-of-the-art machinery.

This intervention is a component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places a higher priority on human capital growth, economic diversification, and skill development.

The main objectives of the initiative are:

– Closing the gap between engineering and technology students’ theoretical and practical skills.

– Increasing graduates’ employability by providing them with tools and experience relevant to the industry.

– Bolstering Nigerian universities’ environments for innovation and research.

– Establishing Nigerian institutions as competitive centers of technical advancement and real-world problem-solving.

The nation’s tertiary system’s many areas and sectors are represented by the 12 chosen universities, which are recruited from federal universities of technology, conventional institutions, and specialist universities. Each will get ₦4 billion to support their infrastructure for engineering education.

These choices include universities with a reputation for offering engineering and technology programs as well as those with the potential to become into more powerful national hubs for technical education.

Execution and Supervision

The FG established a Ministerial Monitoring, Evaluation, and Implementation Committee to oversee project implementation in order to guarantee efficient execution.

It is anticipated that members of this committee, including those from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), will:

Track the development of the project and adherence to the requirements;

Compare results to benchmarks;

Determine issues and suggest changes to the policy;

TETFund has historically concentrated on staff development, infrastructure, research, and academic assistance for Nigerian public tertiary institutions.
