The week‑long celebration of National Privacy Week 2026 concluded in Abuja with a grand finale dinner and awards ceremony hosted by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
The event brought together government officials, industry leaders, civil society advocates, and privacy stakeholders to recognise outstanding contributions to data protection and privacy awareness across the country.
Leading the ceremony was NDPC National Commissioner and CEO, Vincent Olatunji, who presented awards to institutions and individuals that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing Nigeria’s data protection culture.
Among the honourees was His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, who received the Data Privacy Royal Ambassador Award in recognition of his influential advocacy and support for privacy rights and ethical data practices.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was named Most Compliant Public Sector Institution for its adherence to data protection standards and active role in raising awareness at the grassroots level. A private sector organisation was also recognised as Most Compliant Private Sector Organisation for demonstrating strong compliance with data protection regulations and best practices.
Additionally, Mr. Tokunbo Smith, President of the Data and Knowledge Information Privacy Protection Initiative (DKPPI), was honoured for his ongoing collaboration with the NDPC and his dedication to strengthening data privacy education and compliance.
The awards highlighted the Commission’s efforts to foster accountability, transparency and a robust data protection ecosystem in Nigeria, reinforcing the importance of privacy as a cornerstone of trust in the country’s digital transformation journey.
