The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has revealed plans to deploy advanced technology to curb smuggling and manage cross-border transport between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
Speaking during a working visit to the Ogun II Area Command in Abeokuta on Wednesday, Adeniyi disclosed that the initiative is currently being piloted at the Seme-Krake border and will be rolled out across other border points upon successful testing.
“We have developed the technology and are now piloting it. Once it’s successful, we’ll deploy it across the borders to drastically reduce smuggling,” he said.
The CG highlighted ongoing collaboration with customs authorities in the Republic of Benin, including intelligence sharing and plans for a joint task force to oversee goods in transit to Nigeria.
Adeniyi also emphasized the importance of community engagement along border areas. “All our border commands have frameworks for working with local communities, who provide us with vital intelligence,” he noted.
Commending Governor Dapo Abiodun’s industrial development efforts in Ogun State, Adeniyi reaffirmed Customs’ commitment to supporting economic growth through effective border management.
Earlier, the Area Controller of Ogun II, Bisi Alade, reported that the command generated over ₦15 billion in revenue in Q1 2025 — a success he attributed to the support from the Customs leadership.
