When the story of Nigeria’s digital revolution is told, one name will thunder through history—Dr. Mike Adeniyi Adenuga Jr., the visionary behind Globacom, who turned 72 on April 29, 2024. But beyond the birthday wishes and high-profile tributes, what we truly celebrate is the indomitable will of a man who refused to be ordinary.
Before the boardrooms and billion-dollar ventures, young Mike was hustling in the biting cold of New York, juggling odd jobs just to pay his way through university. His parents could afford his tuition, but he chose self-discipline over comfort—a decision that foreshadowed his future as a self-made mogul.
Adenuga’s business instincts kicked in early. After graduating from Northwestern University, he returned home, not to bask in the comfort of white-collar roles, but to revamp his parents’ sawmill. From there, he launched into the world of commodities, fuel trading, real estate, and food processing. Then came banking—Devcom Bank and Equitorial Trust Bank, both of which helped reshape Nigeria’s financial sector.
But his audacity truly took center stage in the 1980s when he plunged into the oil business. While others sold off their government-issued oil blocs, Adenuga drilled. Despite emotional pleas from his mother and doubts from industry watchers, he made history—Consolidated Oil became the first Nigerian firm to strike oil in commercial quantity. He later revived the dying NOLCHEM, turning it into the profitable Conoil Plc we know today.
Still, his biggest gamble—and greatest triumph—came in telecommunications. After losing $20 million when his first GSM licence was revoked, many would have walked away. Not Adenuga. He doubled down, secured the Second National Operator licence, and launched Globacom in 2003 with bold promises: Per Second Billing, cheaper SIM cards, and more accessible call rates. Industry giants scoffed. He delivered.
Under his leadership, Glo became a tech trailblazer. From pioneering Blackberry services and MMS in Nigeria to creating products like Glo Mobile Internet, GloFleetmanager, and Glo TV, Adenuga redefined what was possible. His flagship project, the Glo 1 undersea cable, connected Nigeria and 12 other West African nations directly to the UK, empowering a generation with faster, cheaper broadband.
