The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a strong warning to the public following reports of unauthorized individuals and organizations illegally collecting National Identification Numbers (NIN) from residents in Anambra State in exchange for money.

Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, confirmed that the commission acted swiftly upon receiving information about the illicit activity. In collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the perpetrators were tracked and apprehended. Adegoke stated that the suspects are currently being interrogated and will face legal prosecution.

He reiterated that the collection of NINs by unauthorized parties is a violation of the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the Data Protection Act, and the Cybercrime Act. “The Commission advises all residents of Anambra State and Nigerians at large not to submit their NINs to any individual or group not officially authorized by the Federal Government or NIMC. Any individual found engaging in this illegal practice will be sanctioned accordingly,” Adegoke stated.

He further emphasized that NINs should never be exchanged for monetary compensation under any circumstance, and urged citizens to protect their identity information.

NIMC had previously cautioned Nigerians against sharing their NIN or personal data on unverified platforms or with unaccredited individuals. The Commission stressed that the NIN is strictly meant to facilitate access to government and private sector services, and its use must be verified and legitimate.

To report suspicious activity related to NIN collection, the public is encouraged to contact NIMC via email at nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng or call 07002255646 / 01923000010.

Adegoke also expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their continued support in safeguarding the integrity of the NIN registration process.
