MTN Nigeria has issued a public apology following widespread criticism over its recent tariff hike, which exceeded the 50% upward review approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The telecommunications giant faced backlash after implementing steep increases across various data plans, prompting an outcry from customers and regulatory scrutiny.
The controversy began when MTN raised the cost of its 15GB data bundle from N2,000 to N6,000—a staggering 200% increase. Similarly, the 1.5TB data plan was revised from N150,000 to N240,000, marking a 60% price surge. Additionally, a 100GB bundle previously priced at N20,000 was replaced with a 90GB bundle for N25,000. Customers also lamented the adjustment of the 600GB plan, which was modified to a 480GB bundle at N120,000, representing another 60% increase.
In response to the backlash, MTN released an apology, acknowledging the unexpected and significant price hikes. However, the company did not confirm whether it would roll back the new tariffs. In a message directed at its customers, MTN stated:
“To our 15GB digital bundle lovers, you dey vex. We know.
We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favorite digital bundle.
We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake. This love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much.
