The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced its readiness to handle the anticipated surge in waste generation during the festive season. The assurance was given by LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, on Monday at the Authority’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa.
Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted that comprehensive measures have been put in place to meet the waste management needs of Lagos residents throughout the Yuletide. “Our teams are fully mobilized with trucks and personnel to ensure prompt collection and disposal of waste in all parts of Lagos. This is part of our commitment to making Lagos a clean and liveable city during and after the Christmas holidays,” he stated.
To tackle the expected increase in waste, LAWMA plans to deploy additional waste collection trucks and personnel to high-traffic areas such as markets, residential neighborhoods, and commercial hubs. This proactive approach is aimed at addressing peak waste volumes and ensuring all areas receive prompt attention.
Dr. Gbadegesin also stressed the importance of residents’ cooperation in proper waste management. “We need the cooperation of all residents to bag and containerize their waste properly to facilitate efficient collection. Waste left unbagged often scatters, causes low turnaround time, and creates hazards for our sweepers and other road users,” he explained.
Furthermore, the LAWMA boss appealed to motorists to drive cautiously, particularly around sanitation workers. “Road safety is paramount. We urge motorists to exercise patience and caution, especially around our sweepers. They are dedicated to keeping Lagos clean, and their lives should be safeguarded at all times,” he said.
To complement its operational strategies, LAWMA has intensified public awareness campaigns through radio programs, press releases, and social media engagements, encouraging Lagosians to take responsibility for their waste. “Our goal is to establish a culture of cleanliness and responsibility. This collective effort will significantly reduce environmental hazards and enhance waste collection efficiency,” Dr. Gbadegesin noted.
As part of its transparency and accountability efforts, LAWMA will publish the names and contact numbers of management staff to handle monitoring and complaints.
