Karl Toriola, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, has been conferred an honorary doctorate by Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, during its 48th Convocation Ceremony. The university honoured him alongside four distinguished individuals for their exceptional contributions to humanity and society.
The other honorees included Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, recognised for her advocacy for women and children; Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, a renowned academic and entrepreneur; Daere Afonya-Akobo, a leader in the oil and gas sector; and Dr. Akinade Akanmu Ogunbiyi, the Group Chairman of Mutual Benefits Plc., celebrated for his contributions to corporate leadership and job creation.
The three-day ceremony, led by OAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire, saw 7,368 students graduate. Professor Bamire praised the honorees for their dedication to societal advancement and innovation, stating that they embody the university’s values of excellence, service, and leadership.
Karl Toriola was specifically recognised for his transformative leadership in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, steering MTN Nigeria towards innovation and improved service delivery. The ceremony reinforced OAU’s commitment to celebrating individuals whose work inspires progress and uplifts communities, serving as a beacon of inspiration for future leaders.
