The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has praised Google, X (formerly Twitter), Microsoft, and TikTok for adhering to the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries, a regulatory framework developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The Code sets clear guidelines to promote online safety and effectively manage harmful content.
According to the 2023 compliance report, these platforms have made significant strides in addressing user safety concerns. Key highlights of the report include:
- Registered Complaints: Over 4.1 million (4,125,283) complaints were filed.
- Content Takedowns: A staggering 65.8 million (65,853,581) pieces of content were removed.
- Appeal and Re-uploaded Content: Around 379,433 pieces of content were reinstated after appeals by users.
- Account Closures: Over 12 million (12,099,633) accounts were closed or deactivated.
NITDA commended these actions for fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment, benefiting Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike within the country.
In addition, data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that foreign digital companies, including interactive service platforms and internet intermediaries, contributed over N2.55 trillion (approximately $1.5 billion) in taxes during the first half of 2024. This significant revenue underscores the effectiveness of Nigeria’s regulatory framework in driving compliance and enhancing the digital economy’s fiscal contributions.
While acknowledging the progress, NITDA emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration and innovation to address emerging challenges. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with stakeholders to enhance user safety, digital literacy, trust, and transparency across Nigeria’s digital space.
