To address the growing challenge of marine waste along Lagos’ coastline, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has scaled up its operational activities in commemoration of this year’s World Cleanup Day. The theme for the 2024 event, “Arctic Cities and Marine Litter,” highlights the global concern over the environmental hazards posed by marine pollution.
LAWMA has intensified its efforts to clear waste from Lagos’ water bodies through the deployment of marine waste operatives. These operatives are tasked with removing waste debris from rivers, canals, and lagoons, aiming to mitigate the environmental and health risks associated with marine litter.
According to Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Lagos’ coastal ecosystem is facing a serious threat due to the indiscriminate dumping of waste into its waterways. This accumulation of litter endangers both the state’s rich biodiversity and the health of its residents.
“We are deeply concerned about the rising level of waste entering our waterways. Marine pollution is a global challenge, especially for coastal cities like Lagos. LAWMA is committed to ridding our water bodies of litter that threatens human and marine life,” said Dr. Gbadegesin.
LAWMA’s Marine Waste Unit has played a key role in this initiative, utilizing specialized boats and equipment to remove tons of waste from Lagos waterways. The agency has also launched community sensitization programs, educating coastal residents on proper waste disposal and recycling practices.
Despite the unit’s success, Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized that addressing marine waste requires collective responsibility. He urged residents, particularly those in riverine areas, to adopt more responsible waste management habits. “Every piece of litter that ends up in the water poses a serious threat to our environment,” he added.
As part of the World Cleanup Day activities, LAWMA organized cleanup campaigns across various waterfronts in Lagos. The agency also plans to conduct motorized advocacy campaigns in the Lekki and Ajah areas, raising awareness about the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal in water bodies.
“World Cleanup Day is an opportunity for everyone to take direct action. Our waterways are vital to Lagos’ identity, and it’s our collective duty to protect them. I urge all residents to make waste management a long-term habit, not just for today but every day,” Dr. Gbadegesin stressed.
