Researchers from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, and the Federal University of Technology (FUT) in Minna, Niger State, recently presented their research and development (R&D) projects funded by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).
The presentation, held at the Technology Orientation Centre (TOC) at NASENI’s headquarters in Abuja, was attended by the agency’s senior management, including the Research Directors. This event marked the conclusion of a collaborative effort initiated in April 2023, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NASENI and three professors from the universities.
Professor Abass Alade from LAUTECH’s Department of Chemical Engineering showcased his research on “Treatment of Aquaculture Wastewater Using Waste Banana and Plantain Stem Juice Composite Through Integrated Filtracoagulation Cascade System.” Associate Professor Jimoh Oladejo Tijani of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, presented on “Development of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes-Iron Tungstate Composite for Industrial Wastewater Purification.” Meanwhile, Dr. Sanusi Kolawole from LAUTECH’s Department of Pure and Applied Physics focused on “Development of Nano-coating Green Urea Fertilizer for Agricultural Production Enhancement.”
Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive of NASENI, represented by Research Director Dr. Samuel O. Olusunle, praised the researchers for their effective use of the funding, which supported the publication of their research and the development of their projects.
Professor Abass Alade, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to showcase their work. He noted, “We are grateful for the chance to present our achievements and deeply value NASENI’s support, which has enriched our knowledge and expanded our capabilities.”
Alade highlighted the successes of the projects, including the establishment of a robust agency-academia partnership, the development of research facilities, and the enhancement of human resources through undergraduate and postgraduate involvement. He urged NASENI to provide further funding to facilitate the mass production and commercialization of these innovations through collaborations with the private sector.
NASENI Research Director Dr. Patrick Okwu thanked the researchers for their contributions and encouraged them to include production cost details in future presentations to improve public accessibility.
Engr. Prof. Abdulmalik Onuwe, another NASENI Research Director, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of expanding research deliverables to benefit the manufacturing sector.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Bakare Hassan Oladipo, Deputy Director and Head of the Research Laboratory Development Department at NASENI, thanked the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive for their support. He stated, “This event highlights NASENI’s commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening partnerships between Nigeria’s leading academic institutions and the agency’s R&D efforts.”
