Continuing the statewide community sanitation and advocacy campaign initiated by the Lagos State Government, LAWMA Academy interns, known as Team Eco Resilience, engaged residents of Otto Community, Lagos Mainland, on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of proper waste management.
At the event, LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by Executive Director Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, urged residents to prioritize personal hygiene and proper waste disposal. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility, not solely LAWMA’s duty.
“Ensuring a clean environment is a collective responsibility. Residents should use covered bins for waste disposal to prevent disease spread,” Adebiyi advised.
Dr. Gbadegesin also encouraged Otto Community youths to join the LAWMA Academy as interns. “Graduate youths from the community can spread awareness about what they have learned. There are many opportunities in waste management. We must open our eyes to these possibilities,” he noted.
Saloko Muiz Babatunde, CDA chairman of Otto Community and CDC chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, called on residents to participate in the weekly clean-up exercises organized by the community, warning that non-participants would face sanctions.
Representatives from the Oloto of Otto Community, including Prince Fuhad Oloto and Chief of Staff Honourable Akeem Esuru-osho, pledged their support for LAWMA and adherence to environmental regulations.
In a related initiative, traders at United Amu Market have taken the initiative to clean their business premises, inspired by a recent sanitation awareness effort at Alamutu Market, Idi-Oro, led by Lagos State Government officials.
Dr. Gbadegesin praised the traders for their environmental responsibility and urged other markets in the state to follow their example. “Achieving a clean and livable city requires everyone to play their part. We cannot allow the state’s beauty to erode due to indiscriminate waste dumping and careless attitudes. The environment is ours to cherish and preserve. Let’s keep Lagos clean,” he stated.
Recently, officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and LAWMA, including Dr. Gbadegesin, conducted a comprehensive sanitation and sensitization exercise at Alamutu Market, Idi-Oro, Mushin.
