Nigeria is gearing up to launch two new satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2 and NIGCOMSAT-3. These satellites aim to replace the aging NIGCOMSAT-1R, which has been pivotal in meeting the country’s communication needs since its launch in December 2011.
NIGCOMSAT-1R, whose operational lifespan is nearing its end, has played a crucial role in providing essential services such as communications, internet connectivity, healthcare support, agricultural monitoring, environmental protection, and national security enhancements.
The call for global investors to participate in the development and launch of these new satellites comes amid efforts to ensure uninterrupted satellite services. Former Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, had advocated for acquiring backup satellites to safeguard against disruptions. However, proposals for financing through a $550 million loan from China-Exim Bank faced scrutiny from stakeholders questioning profitability and utilization of existing infrastructure.
Despite earlier plans announced by NIGCOMSAT’s leadership, including former Managing Director Dr. Abimbola Alale, to launch NIGCOMSAT-2 in 2023 and NIGCOMSAT-3 in 2025, these initiatives did not materialize as anticipated.
NIGCOMSAT-1R itself was a replacement for NIGCOMSAT-1, which failed shortly after its May 2007 launch. Funded through an insurance payout from the failed satellite and a contract with China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC), NIGCOMSAT-1R aimed to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign satellite services, although underutilization issues have persisted.
Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, the current Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, underscored the project’s importance for Nigeria’s technological advancement. The successful launch of NIGCOMSAT-2 and NIGCOMSAT-3 is expected to significantly enhance satellite communications and connectivity, positioning Nigeria as a prominent player in the global satellite market.
This initiative marks a pivotal step towards overcoming previous challenges, ensuring the continuity and expansion of Nigeria’s satellite services. It lays a solid foundation for future technological advancements and economic growth, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to technological innovation and infrastructure development.
