MultiChoice has announced a reversion to its previous subscription rates after a recent court mandate. This decision comes in the wake of a judicial ruling that found the earlier price hikes unjustified, which had resulted in substantial subscriber losses, particularly in Nigeria.
The company had initially increased its prices in response to economic pressures, including high inflation and currency devaluation. However, the price adjustments were met with substantial backlash, leading to over a million subscribers discontinuing their services.
As part of the court-mandated reversal, DStv subscribers will now benefit from reduced rates across various packages. For instance, the DStv Premium package, which previously cost N37,000, will now be available for N29,500. Similarly, the DStv Compact+ package will be reduced from N25,000 to N19,800. Other packages such as DStv Compact Bouquet, DStv Confam, DStv Yanga, and DStv Padi will also see price reductions. GOtv customers are not left out, as the GOtv Super+ package will now cost N12,500, down from N15,700, while the GOtv Super package will be priced at N7,600, reduced from N9,600. The GOtv Jinja package will see a decrease from N3,300 to N2,700.
Despite the court ruling, there remains some uncertainty regarding MultiChoice’s compliance with the order to provide a month of free subscription to its customers. The company has signaled its intention to challenge this aspect of the ruling, citing potential adverse effects on its business model.
The reduction in subscription rates is expected to ease the financial burden on customers, particularly during these challenging economic times. This move is anticipated to restore customer confidence and possibly regain the subscriber base lost due to the previous price hikes.
