In response to recent mobilization efforts by various groups planning mass protests nationwide, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reiterated that while citizens have the right to protest, this right extends only to peaceful demonstrations. The police have emphasized their duty to protect the rights of all citizens, including those participating in peaceful protests, but will not tolerate any violations of others’ rights or the violent destruction of lives and property in the name of a protest.
The NPF has made it clear that any group intending to stage a peaceful protest should inform the police and request protection. Those who fail to do so and engage in unlawful activities should be prepared to face the full weight of the law. The public is reminded that tampering with the national grid, disrupting electricity transmission, or causing disruptions to critical infrastructure such as airports, hospitals, and other essential services constitutes a criminal offense. Violent picketing and any form of sabotage will not be tolerated.
The Nigeria Police Force, described as a civil and responsive institution dedicated to maintaining law and order, has warned that any attempt to disrupt critical infrastructure could amount to economic sabotage, treasonable felony, and pose a threat to national security and public safety. Such actions during any protest will be met with the full force of the law.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police and State Command Commissioners of Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, to ensure robust security arrangements are in place. These measures include strategic deployments to protect key infrastructure and ensure that any protests remain peaceful and lawful.
The police also appealed to parents and guardians to warn their wards against being manipulated by individuals with intentions to create anarchy. Disgruntled and misguided individuals mobilizing for destructive purposes are advised to abandon their plans in the interest of national peace and security.
