Telcos in Nigeria have highlighted the disparity between current price controls and economic realities, urging government intervention to tackle pricing challenges. Despite enduring economic difficulties, these companies have refrained from adjusting prices for over a decade, citing regulatory constraints as the primary obstacle.
In a joint statement from the Association of Licenced Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), concerns were voiced regarding the industry’s sustainability and the potential erosion of investor confidence due to persistent pricing issues. ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, and ATCON President, Mr. Tony Emoekpere, stressed the importance of establishing a pricing framework that balances consumer affordability with operators’ financial stability. They called for a dialogue between the government and industry stakeholders to effectively tackle these challenges.
The telcos also expressed alarm over increasing security threats affecting their services. Recognizing the crucial role of telecom infrastructure in national security and socioeconomic development, they urged the government to prioritize security measures to protect critical assets from vandalism and sabotage.
Attacks on cell towers, fiber optic cables, and other essential infrastructure not only disrupt services but also result in significant financial losses for operators. The industry called for collaboration with law enforcement agencies to bolster protection measures and effectively address security challenges.
Against this backdrop, telecom companies emphasized the necessity of substantial investments in network expansion, maintenance, and technological upgrades to meet evolving consumer demands and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
As the industry awaits a response from the government, stakeholders emphasized the urgent need to address pricing and security concerns to sustain growth and development in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
