The Federal High Court in Lagos has handed down a six-month prison sentence without the option of a fine to the controversial cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, for the abuse of the Naira currency. Justice Abimbola Awogboro delivered the verdict as a stern warning to others engaging in similar acts of currency abuse and mutilation.
During the sentencing, the judge inquired about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he promptly identified himself as a man. The judge specified that the jail term would commence from March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
The court had previously convicted Bobrisky on April 5 after he pleaded guilty to charges of abusing the Naira currency brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges detailed instances where Bobrisky was accused of tampering with various sums of money issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria during social events, leading to violations under the Central Bank Act of 2007.
Despite the public holiday declared last Thursday for the Eid-l-Fitri celebration, the court reconvened to impose the sentence on Bobrisky, marking a significant moment in the legal battle surrounding the controversial figure’s actions.
