To commemorate this year’s World Clean-up Day, a global initiative committed to eradicating litter and waste from our environment, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to demonstrate their dedication to responsible waste management.
During a press briefing focused on the theme of this year’s event, “Celebrate the Earth,” Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, emphasized the significance of the annual program as an opportunity for profound contemplation regarding the necessity for ongoing clean-up efforts and efficient waste management within the state. He called upon residents to actively engage in community clean-up initiatives, with a special emphasis on addressing waste in waterways.
He said, “Residents are encouraged to actively participate in community cleanup activities, particularly focusing on waterways. This collective effort helps in the removal of plastic waste from our vulnerable ecosystems, safeguarding them from further harm. We also advise residents to own a waste bin and patronise only accredited PSP operators.
One of LAWMA’s most impactful initiatives is the promotion of plastic recycling program. This program plays a crucial role in mitigating environmental degradation and contributes to economic growth by creating employment opportunities within the state. So, we encourage residents to embrace sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics, such as reusable water bottles”.
Dr. Gbadegesin underscored the significance of source separation, an essential practice involving the segregation of waste at its point of origin. This approach streamlines the recycling process, reduces contamination, and enhances the efficiency of recycling efforts.
He passionately encouraged residents to reject improper waste disposal in drainages, setbacks, walkways, and other unsuitable locations. He emphasized that such irresponsible actions not only mar the environment but also pose a grave threat to wildlife and aquatic ecosystems.
Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized the detrimental impact of excessive single-use plastic consumption on pollution levels. He advised residents to curtail their usage and explore sustainable alternatives.
The head of LAWMA stressed the utmost importance of keeping drains and gutters free from debris to prevent waterlogging and flooding, emphasizing that neglecting this duty could result in preventable environmental hazards.
Furthermore, he cautioned against the use of waste materials for land reclamation, as it posed a dual threat to both the environment and the well-being of the local populace.
“As we observe World Clean-up Day, let us all come together to Celebrate the Earth and take meaningful steps towards caring for our environment. With LAWMA’s comprehensive guidelines and initiatives, we are poised to make a significant impact in the fight against plastic pollution and for a sustainable, cleaner future”, he stated.
