Globacom, Nigeria’s leading digital services provider, marked a significant milestone on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, as it celebrated 20 years of delivering innovative, high-quality, and affordable telecommunications services to its customers. The company expressed its heartfelt gratitude to Nigerians for their unwavering support during this remarkable journey.

Since its inception in 2003, Globacom has played a pivotal role in transforming the telecommunications landscape in Nigeria. The company’s commitment to innovation, coupled with its dedication to providing top-notch services, has had a profound impact on millions of Nigerians. In a press statement issued in Lagos, Globacom expressed its gratitude to the government, subscribers, business partners, and all stakeholders who have shown faith in the company over the years.

Globacom is renowned for a series of groundbreaking initiatives that have reshaped the Nigerian telecom industry. Notable achievements include the drastic reduction in the cost of acquiring SIM cards, from approximately N25,000 to just about N200. Additionally, the company introduced Per Second Billing, defying industry expectations by implementing it years ahead of schedule.

Some of the pioneering innovations brought to Nigeria by Globacom include Blackberry services, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Magic Plus, Glo Direct, Glo Fonepals, Africhat, Glo Mobile Internet, GloFleetmanager, M-Banking, and Glo Mobile Office. The company also led the way in launching 2.5G, 3G, and 4G LTE networks, enhancing connectivity and internet speeds for consumers.

In a significant infrastructure achievement, Globacom constructed the Glo 1 international submarine cable, connecting West Africa directly to the United Kingdom and the global telecommunications network. This submarine cable, spanning thousands of kilometers, not only revolutionized internet services but also became the preferred choice for global Over-The-Top (OTT) providers. It also linked 12 West African nations, including landlocked countries, fostering regional connectivity.

Globacom stated, “As we celebrate our achievements over the past twenty years, we wish to acknowledge that Globacom’s significant success is a result of the support of millions of Nigerians. We wish to thank them for their love and patronage and for the unprecedented confidence they have consistently shown in the company.”

Reaffirming its commitment to the corporate promise made at its launch, the company emphasized its role as a catalyst for socio-economic empowerment, not only in Nigeria but across Africa. Globacom pledged to continue making substantial investments in new technologies to exceed customer expectations, ensuring that its legacy of innovation and service excellence continues into the future.
